HOW TO GET BETTER ANSWERS FROM AI
The quality of the answer often depends on the quality of the prompt.
1. GIVE CONTEXT
AI works best when it understands the situation.
❌ Bad Prompt:
Does the school have to do a transition plan?
✅ Better Prompt:
My child received HHI for several months due to disability-related barriers to school attendance. The school ended HHI without a transition meeting. Under Section 504, what obligations might the school have when transitioning a student back to school?
Key notes
AI works best when it understands the situation.
- Include important background information.
- Explain what happened before asking a question.
- Identify the student’s disability-related needs.
- Include relevant dates, meetings, and decisions.
- Share the goal you are trying to achieve.
- The more accurate the context, the more useful the answer.
2. PROVIDE REDACTED DOCUMENTS
Key notes
AI can only analyze information it can see.
- Upload relevant documents whenever possible.
- Remove personal information before sharing.
- Include emails, evaluations, meeting notes, IEPs, 504 Plans, and PWNs.
- Provide complete documents, not isolated excerpts when context matters.
- More documentation often leads to more accurate analysis.
- AI cannot review documents that have not been provided.
💡 Tip: Redacted document drop-ins often produce better answers than summaries because AI can review the actual language, dates, and documentation.
When possible, upload:
📄 IEPs
📄 Section 504 Plans
📄 PWNs
📄 Emails
📄 Meeting Notes
📄 Evaluation Reports
AI can only analyze information it can see.
3. ASK SPECIFIC QUESTIONS
❌ Bad Prompt:
What do you think?
✅ Better Prompt:
Does this email appear consistent with the previous statements made by the school?
✅ Better Prompt:
What questions should I ask at my next meeting?
4. USE AI TRANSCRIPTS EFFECTIVELY
When using Otter, Fireflies, Zoom AI, or other transcription tools:
✔ Review for errors
✔ Check names and dates
✔ Verify important statements
✔ Search key words and phrases
Transcripts help identify patterns and preserve details that are often forgotten after meetings.
5. ASK FOR SOURCES
✅ Good Prompt:
Please identify the law, regulation, guidance document, or source that supports this answer.
Always ask where information came from.
6. FACT-CHECK EVERYTHING
⚠ AI can make mistakes.
⚠ AI can misunderstand context.
⚠ AI may provide outdated information.
Always verify:
✔ Laws
✔ Policies
✔ Regulations
✔ Dates
✔ Citations
✔ Case law
Use multiple sources whenever possible.
